Contests and Awards
Annually, the Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR, hosts a Student Awards program where we sponsor and present scholarships and awards to students in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach area. Our chapter supports the following awards:
- The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR, Scholarship is awarded to one or two high school seniors in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District
- DAR Good Citizens award to a high school senior at each school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
- DAR Youth Leadership Medal awarded to one student in each grade seven through 11 in each participating public, private, and parochial school in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
- DAR American History essay contest awards for first, second, and third-place essays in each grade fifth through eighth grade in participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
- Excellence in American History awards are presented to one fifth-grader in each class in participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR, Scholarship
The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR, scholarship is given each May to one or two graduating students who have applied to the chapter scholarship committee.
Scholarship information and guidelines are sent to high school counselors’ offices in the spring.
- The scholarship is open to graduating seniors
- One or two scholarships are awarded
- Open to Newport-Mesa Unified School District high schools
- United States citizenship is not required
Excellence in American History Award
Fifth graders are selected by their respective teachers for excellence in the subject of American History.
Award information and guidelines are sent to participating schools in the spring.
- The award is open to students in the fifth grade
- One award per classroom
- Open to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
