Student Awards & Scholarship

The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR hosts a Student Awards program each academic year during which we present awards and our scholarship to students in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.

Our program is supported by our generous community and chapter members to encourage our local students to engage with our nation's history and to honor young people who exemplify the values of service, leadership, and patriotism.

If you would like to support our Student Awards program and/or our Scholarship fund with a tax-deductible donation, you can do so by:

  • Check: Mailing a check to payable to "Col. Wm. Cabell Chapter NSDAR" with the intended program in the memo line (e.g. Student Awards, Scholarship) to PO Box 7884, Newport Beach, CA 92658-7884

Our chapter distributes the following awards each year:

  • The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR Scholarship is awarded to one or two high school seniors graduating from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
  • DAR Good Citizens Award is given to a high school senior at each school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
  • DAR Youth Leadership Medal is presented to students in seventh through eleventh grades at participating schools.
  • DAR American History Essay Contest awards are distributed to the first, second, and third-place essays in fifth through eighth grades in participating schools.
  • Excellence in American History Award is presented to one fifth-grader in each class in participating schools.

 


 

The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR Scholarship

The Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR Scholarship is given each May to one or two graduating seniors chosen by Scholarship Committee.

Scholarship information and guidelines are sent to high school counselors’ offices in the spring semester. 

  • The scholarship is open to graduating seniors
  • Applicants must submit a completed application and essay to the Scholarship Committee by the deadline
  • One or two scholarships may be awarded
  • Open to Newport-Mesa Unified School District high school students
  • United States citizenship is not required

DAR Good Citizens Award 

High school seniors who exemplify the good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities are selected by their respective school counselors. 

  • The award is open to students in grade 12
  • One award per Newport-Mesa Unified School District high school
  • United States citizenship is not required

DAR Youth Leadership Medal

Students in seventh to eleventh grade that exemplify the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism are selected by their respective school counselors.

  • The medal is open to students grades 7 through 11
  • One medal per grade per school
  • Open to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach

DAR American History Essay Contest 

The American History Essay Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history and learn about history in a new light. Essays are reviewed by the Student Awards Committee. 

  • The award is open to students grades 5 through 8
  • Awards are given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-placed essays in each grade
  • Open to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach

Excellence in American History Award

Fifth graders are selected by their respective teachers for excellence in the subject of American History.

  • The award is open to students in grade 5
  • One award per classroom
  • Open to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach
