Historic Preservation
As a chapter we support the efforts to preserve both local and national history. We enjoy visiting local historic sites as Diego Sepulveda Adobe in Costa Mesa and Mission San Juan Capistrano, as well as visits to local museums such as the Hilbert Museum of California Art. Our chapter meetings feature a variety of programing and have included topics such as "Historic Glass Collecting - Revolution Era to Civil War", "Flags of our Fathers - Battle of Iwo Jima", and "Abe and Mary - by the Association of Lincoln Presenters", and other historical themes. Additionally, our chapter has fundraised to support the preservation of the Battleship USS Iowa at the Port of Los Angeles.
Education
We focus on our local schools through a robust American history and student awards program that culminates each May at our annual awards ceremony. We welcome students, parents, and school faculty to participate in the presentation of the DAR Good Citizens awards, DAR Youth Leadership Medals, national DAR American History Essay Contest awards, and Excellence in American History Awards. Our Colonel William Cabell Chapter, NSDAR Scholarship is presented each year to one or two graduating seniors from our local school district.
Patriotism
Supporting veterans and military families is an important cause for our chapter. We make a variety of contributions to the Fisher House Foundation and VA Medical Center in Long Beach including donations to their food panty, hosting baby showers for veterans, and participating in Operation Santa. Each holiday season we fundraise and lay wreaths on veterans' graves through Wreaths Across America.
Genealogy Classes and Membership Information
Our chapter is fortunate to be located near the Orange County Family Search Library in Orange, California. We sometimes partner with the library to hold genealogy classes. If you are interested in joining us for one of these informative and interesting classes, or if you just want more information about them, please contact our chapter.
